The trio (me, Mike Alvidrez, and Alex Smith) recorded - live - 8 tunes at Beacon Street Studios, and we are going to celebrate the release at our next gig - March 28 at Alvas Showroom. This is not Mike's or Alex's first album, but it is mine. I did record a demo last year, but that was a completely different animal. I wanted to say a few words about the album, so here goes:
I say the recording is "live" because we didn't record separate tracks and layer them; no overdubbing. We wanted to "be in the moment" and play off each other to generate a more honest sound and inspired improvisation. Recording 'live' is also a very different experience (opposed to recording separate tracks, performing numerous takes, and overdubbing the heck out of each tune). When we play live, we play together as a unit. The difference between live and overdubbing is like the difference between having a 1-way conversation and a 3-way conversation. We prefer the latter for jazz and for these particular compositions. We only had time to record one or two complete takes of each tune. Then Rob Beaton (Mixing/Mastering Engineer) and I decided which cuts to use on the album (CD; I still can't call them CDs yet - old school I suppose.) Mike and Alex are experienced in the studio, and they played like it! This is a new experience for me, yet I am super happy with the results. All of the tunes are originals - no standards. The equality of the trio with respect to balance, or musical conversation, was imperative. We had to be as stable as a 3 legged table. This trio is not a duo backing up a soloist. Yes, I composed the melodies and basic harmony. But the 3 of us created the music! Both Mike and Alex performed beautiful solos, support melodies and rhythms. Their playing really brought life to these tunes. I am really looking forward to the release party on the 28th of March. The trio will play the 1st set, and then we will have wonderful guests players (Sax and Vocals) join us in the 2nd set. I will elaborate more on the tunes and the guests in a subsequent post. I hope to see all of you at Alvas this March 28th. The players are wonderful, and I promise it will be a gas. Thanks for all of your support.
