I was recently gifted Mandarin Blue by the Bruce Baker Trio, and I wanted to just say how wonderful this release is, and congratulate Bruce and his talented band mates on truly exceptional music. I'm a fan of the classic jazz trio: piano, bass and drums, and though I hadn't heard the trio before, the BB3 delighted me in all aspects of listening pleasure. There's a wonderful mix of compositions here, both soft and mellow, and dynamic and lively. What's truly impressive is how each member gets their moments to really let the songs shine. Each player is allowed to solo and add to each composition. Speaking of a wonderful mix, Mandarin Blue just sounds good! The recording is naturally, effortlessly alive, with nice 'air' around each instrument. Beautiful, natural dynamics here, which just lend to the overall professional presentation and sheen of this album. If you are at all a fan of tasty jazz trios, make yourself happy and listen to your own copy of Mandarin Blue. I look forward to more releases from the Bruce Baker and his Altered Presence Jazz Band.

Bruce Baker (& The Altered Presence Jazz Band) is a force to be reckoned with!! Living in South Africa makes it impossible to attend his/their concerts, but I just LOVE listening to his latest CD. His original compositions are great, and what makes him a brilliant pianist, is the way he "steps back" to let the other musicians do their solos, enhancing the songs even more. Truly a winning combination! I still have to find my favorite track - difficult to choose! My advice to anyone who reads this is: YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO ADD THIS CD TO YOUR COLLECTION!!!
